Cleaning products and sanitisers

Standard / Test method

ASTM E1153

Efficacy testing of sanitisers on inanimate, hard, non-porous surfaces that do not come into contact with food.

Overview

ASTM E1153 describes a quantitative test method for assessing the efficacy of sanitisers on pre-cleaned, inanimate, hard, non-porous surfaces that do not come into contact with food.

The method also covers one-step cleaner-sanitisers used on lightly soiled surfaces within this scope. These products combine cleaning and sanitising in a single application.

Efficacy is assessed by comparing the viable microbial counts recovered from treated test carriers with those from controls. Product concentration, contact time and other test conditions are selected in accordance with the method and intended use. Additional or modified conditions can be agreed for project-specific studies.

Typical applications

Sanitisers

For products intended to reduce microbial contamination on inanimate, hard, non-porous surfaces without food contact.

Cleaner-sanitisers

For products that combine cleaning and sanitising in one step on lightly soiled surfaces within the scope of the method.

Surface applications

For studies of product efficacy on suitable non-porous materials under defined conditions of use.

Frequently asked questions

What is ASTM E1153 suitable for?

ASTM E1153 is suitable for assessing sanitisers and one-step cleaner-sanitisers used on inanimate, hard, non-porous surfaces that do not come into contact with food.

Is ASTM E1153 a test for hand sanitisers?

No. ASTM E1153 concerns products used on inanimate surfaces. Other test methods are used to assess hygienic hand disinfection or hygienic handwashing.

Which surfaces can be tested?

The method is intended for inanimate, hard, non-porous surfaces without food contact. The suitability of a particular surface depends on the material, product and study objective. Alternative test surfaces may require modifications to the method.

Can the test parameters be adapted?

Conditions required for testing in accordance with ASTM E1153 must be met. Suitable conditions can be selected within the method's requirements. Additional organisms, surfaces or other modified conditions can be agreed where scientifically appropriate and documented as an adapted study.

How does ASTM E1153 differ from DIN EN 1276?

DIN EN 1276 is a quantitative suspension test for assessing bactericidal efficacy. ASTM E1153 assesses sanitiser efficacy on inanimate, hard, non-porous surfaces without food contact.
