Plastics & non-porous surfaces
Standard / Test method
ASTM E2180
Testing of the antimicrobial activity of agents incorporated into or bound to polymeric or hydrophobic materials in accordance with ASTM E2180.
Overview
ASTM E2180 describes a standardised method for quantitatively assessing the antimicrobial activity of agents incorporated into or bound to polymeric or hydrophobic materials.
The test microorganisms are suspended in an agar slurry, which promotes uniform contact with the test surface. Examples of test organisms include Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Results are evaluated quantitatively.
Depending on your testing objective, sample type, sample size, contact time or requested test strains, we can assess whether project-specific adaptations to the test design are appropriate.
Typical applications
Hydrophobic materials
For materials whose low wettability can limit the suitability of conventional surface test methods.
Polymeric materials
For plastics and polymeric materials with incorporated or bound antimicrobial agents.
Material development
For assessing antimicrobial additives, formulations and functionalised material surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Which materials are suitable for testing in accordance with ASTM E2180?
ASTM E2180 is particularly suitable for polymeric or hydrophobic materials with antimicrobial agents incorporated into the material or bound to its surface.
Why is an agar slurry used in ASTM E2180 testing?
The agar slurry helps maintain close, uniform contact between the test microorganisms and the test surface. This is particularly relevant for hydrophobic materials, which can be difficult to wet evenly.
Which test organisms are used in ASTM E2180 testing?
Examples of test organisms include Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Depending on your testing objective, the suitability of additional microorganisms can be assessed for an adapted test design.
What is the difference between ASTM E2180 and ISO 22196?
ISO 22196 is used to assess antibacterial activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces. ASTM E2180 is particularly relevant for polymeric or hydrophobic materials and uses an agar slurry to maintain contact between the test microorganisms and the test surface.
