Material and surface samples
Microbiological testing of material samples
Culture-based detection of culturable moulds, yeasts and bacteria in material and surface samples, supplemented by microscopic examination where mould contamination is suspected.
Investigating microbial contamination in materials
Material and surface samples can be examined where microbial growth, contamination or a microbial reservoir is suspected. Depending on the sample type, culturable moulds, yeasts and bacteria are assessed quantitatively, qualitatively or semi-quantitatively.
For investigations involving moulds, microscopy can provide additional evidence of spores or mycelium within or on the material. The material type, sampling method and information required determine the appropriate scope of testing.
For moulds, sampling and cultivation are based on DIN ISO 16000-21 and DIN ISO 16000-17 respectively; the culture-based procedure is adapted for bacteria.
Frequently asked questions
What results can be provided?
For suitable material samples, counts of culturable moulds, yeasts and bacteria can be reported quantitatively as colony-forming units per gram (CFU/g). Swab and contact plate samples are assessed qualitatively or semi-quantitatively based on growth or colony density. For investigations involving moulds, direct microscopy can provide a semi-quantitative assessment of spores, spore types and hyphal fragments.
How informative are the results?
The assessment applies to the sample submitted and depends on appropriate sampling that is as representative as possible. Culture-based methods detect only microorganisms capable of growing under the selected test conditions.
How should samples be submitted?
Sample type, quantity, sampling location, packaging and transport should be agreed before submission.
Which product groups are excluded from this service?
Food, medicinal products and other pharmaceutical products, as well as medical devices, are not tested as part of this service. If the product or sample category is unclear, suitability should be confirmed before submission.
Need microbiological testing of a material sample?
Describe the material, sampling situation and purpose of the investigation so that an appropriate scope of testing can be established.
