Identification of microbial isolates

Molecular identification enables the taxonomic assignment of culturable microorganisms using suitable genetic target regions. Microorganisms can be cultured from samples, isolated and processed further as pure cultures.

Bacteria are generally identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene (16S rDNA). Depending on the enquiry and organism group, fungal isolates can be examined using target regions such as ITS, RPB1 or RPB2.

The level of identification depends on the isolate and the available reference data. Identification to genus or species level may be possible, depending on the organism.
