Water hygiene
Industrial and process water
Microbiological testing of industrial and process water, and water samples from specific applications.
Microbiological testing of process water
Industrial and process water is used in many technical and industrial systems. Microorganisms and biofilms can cause hygiene problems and affect processes, system operation, product quality or workplace safety.
Suitable tests depend on the water source, its use and the specific enquiry. An initial microscopic examination is often carried out and may provide indications of microorganisms, possible biofilm structures and abiotic particles. Microbiological testing often includes total viable counts of bacteria, moulds and yeasts under standardised culture conditions or conditions specified for the individual investigation.
Where biofilm is suspected, appropriate investigations can be carried out. Endotoxin concentration is another parameter that can often provide useful information.
Factors considered when selecting tests include temperature, water circulation, potential aerosol formation, product contact and requirements specific to the industry.
If the appropriate scope of testing has not yet been established, we will be happy to advise you.
Depending on the situation, testing for selected indicator or target organisms, such as Legionella spp. or Pseudomonas aeruginosa, can also be carried out. Coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, intestinal enterococci or Clostridium perfringens may also be relevant to hygiene investigations.
Process water & applications
Testing tailored to the system, use and monitoring objective
Microbiological requirements for process water can vary considerably depending on the industry and technical application. The scope of testing is therefore selected to suit each application.
In addition to total viable counts, targeted testing for selected indicator or target organisms and other microbiological parameters may be useful. The selection depends on the water source, temperature, water circulation, aerosol formation, product contact and monitoring objective.
Ongoing monitoring, comparative testing or investigations into recurring microbiological findings can also be arranged to suit the process and the specific enquiry.
Total viable count
Assessment of the general culturable microbial load in industrial and process water samples under defined conditions.
Indicator and target organisms
Targeted testing for selected microorganisms according to the water source, system conditions, application and monitoring objective.
Endotoxins and additional parameters
Additional testing for endotoxins, yeasts, moulds or parameters relating to biofilm where relevant to the process, product or application.
